The Principality of Asturias is a spanish autonomous community in the Cantabrian coast. It borders with the Cantabria to it´s east, Galicia to it´s west, and Castilla Leon to it´s south. Towards the north is the Cantabrian Sea. The capital of Asturias is Oviedo, even though the most populated city is Gijon with more than 300,000 inhabitants. Asturias is a Principality with a lot of history and with many historic dates that cannot be forgotten. It also offers a neverending amount of possibilities. From the sea, to the mountain, golden sand beaches, natural and unique parks of great worth.
Asturias has a surface of 10,000 squared kilometers of extensive hills, mountains, beaches, and cities in which more than a million people live today. They are divided between Gijon with almost 300,000 inhabitants and Oviedo with about 225,000 inhabitants. Aviles, Langreo, or Mieres are other important localities in Asturias.
The main language spoken in Asturias is castilian spanish, but there is also a language spoken frequently called Bable that is mostly spoken in small municipalities of the interior.
Asturias is a community rich in history, there many muslims started to forge their expulsion of the penninsula, and from this same place Don Pelayo began to reign. This is who from the European Peaks lead the battle and won the arabs. You´ll also find many of the Saint Jacob routes, as well as localities of much beauty and tradition such as as Ribadesella, LLanes, Luara, Cangas de Onis or the impressing natural park of Covadonga Lakes.
From it´s gastronomy we must mention the famous "fabada" which is a delicious bean stew, blood sausage, cheeses and above all it´s delicious and world famous ciders.
Asturias is nature, delicious gastronomy, a walk in rural Spain, an enchanting spot with incredible natural and protected parks etc. Asturias is also a place in which rural homes are part of it´s tradition, and therefore make a great choice to stay in one of them while on holiday with family or friends. There are beautiful apartments in cities like Gijon, and Oviedo as well as lots of hotels in other cities as well as rural hotels and homes, hostels and guesthouses. Asturias has many different activities in which to participate in, activities like skiing, surfing, windsurfing and diving, without forgetting bike riding, golf and trekking routes. |
